Normally, healthy gums will not bleed when scaling. They only bleed when calculus accumulates in the mouth. The accumulation of dental calculus around the gums causes inflammation (that is not painful on a day-to-day basis) and swelling of the gums, which may bleed when exposed to external force such as a thorough teeth cleaning. If your gums bleed slightly, you need to pay more attention to daily cleaning. If you bleed heavily, it means your gums have been severely inflamed, which may indicate periodontal disease. Invisalign is just one brand of clear aligners that is available to patients. Traditional braces can be separated into traditional brackets, self ligating brackets, buccal braces or lingual braces. Invislible braces works by using clear plastic to push teeth into place. Traditional braces work by pulling teeth towards the metal wire. Depending on your aesthetic, functional, and health needs, one can truly be better than the other. That is why we do not believe in a one size fits all approach. We have had orthodontic patients from 7 to 70 years old. The best time to start treatment really depends, however, it is best to start the first orthodontic assessment around 7 to 8 years old when the front 6-8 adult incisors have erupted. We have found that early childhood orthodontics (or “phased orthodontics”) are beneficial to early correction of some facial deformities and prevention of extraction orthodontics when the child later becomes a teenager.

Implants are the closest replacement to replicating the feel, bite and appearance of natural teeth. So much so that our patients who have received dental implants generally tell us they are 80-100% like natural teeth. Most attribute the remaining 10-20% due to the fact that they psychologically know it is not real, but not in terms of chewing function or feel.Dentures are usually chosen by those who do not have the financial ability to afford a dental implant or a dental bridge. Dentures only replicate roughly 20-40% of chewing function and are inconvenient.Firstly, if there are moderate to a lot of missing teeth, dentures sit on gum and not on the nearby teeth. So all the force of chewing is on the gums and therefore cannot chew harder or tougher foods (that may or may not contain more nutrients). Secondly, dentures are bulkier and less convenient than implants because they have bars and plates to connect all the clasps and denture teeth, and they need to be taken off when sleeping.Thirdly, dentures wear down quicker due to the teeth made out of plastic, so the bite changes over time. They also clasp on real teeth - gradually leading to cavities or loosening and thus leading to possible extraction. Most patients that wear dentures need to replace them roughly every 5-10 years due to these two reasons.However, even with all these drawbacks, they are still a good choice for those who cannot opt for surgery, have too little teeth to support dental bridge(s) or do not have enough bone to support dental implants.

At your first consultation, we begin by listening. We want to understand what has been happening — not just the immediate problem, but the full picture behind it. From there, your dentist will take any necessary records (such as X-rays, photographs or 3D scans), identify the pattern behind your dental concerns, and explain what that means for your specific situation. You will leave with a clear understanding of what is happening and what your options are — so you can make a decision that is right for you. Our usual recommendation is once every 6-18 months to prevent periodontal disease. The frequency of scaling is determined foremost by the health of the gums, also the amount of stain and calculus.

Brushing is essential — but it addresses only one part of oral health. Most of the factors that cause teeth to deteriorate over time are silent and unfelt: the bite forces that crack teeth, the gum inflammation that erodes bone, the dietary habits that increase cavity risk. These often do not hurt until they are advanced. If you feel like you are always fixing the same problems, it is likely that one of these deeper causes has not yet been identified. At Aspire Dental Care, finding that pattern is the first thing we do.

Mouthwash is only a supplement to good tooth brushing and interdental cleaning (i.e. flossing or interdental brush). You can use a suitable mouthwash 'only' if necessary. For example, use a mouthwash containing fluoride to prevent tooth decay; use a mouthwash containing antiseptic ingredients to treat inflammation.

Keeping teeth white has many factors. The most important factor is to prevent teeth from staining or yellowing. The best way to do that is to prevent teeth from drying after eating or drinking highly staining foods/drinks (i.e. curry, coffee, tea). Drink plenty of water or at the minimum, rinse (subtly or vigorously) after intake of those types of foods.Another way is to remove micro-stains before they become obvious to the naked eye. We recommend brushing with a slightly abrasive* substance like activated charcoal powder (applied with or without toothpaste). *Because these substances are abrasive, they should be used infrequently. The frequency can be determined with your dentist depending on the health of your current teeth.
