FAQ
What does Aspire Dental Care specialise in?
We concentrate our efforts on long-term, comprehensive dentistry that will help you keep your teeth for your lifetime.
In terms of treatment, our core services are related to dental surgeries (including wisdom teeth removal and implants), face-driven orthodontics, periodontics (gum and bone health) and cosmetic/aesthetic dentistry.
As you will read below, ‘comprehensive’ dentistry is built on top of a strong dental health foundation - to which we also will help you achieve.
What is long-term, comprehensive dentistry?
At Aspire Dental Care, comprehensive dentistry means acknowledging the root cause(s) of your dental issues so you can ultimately choose option(s) that will lead to long-term (and comprehensive) results.
Do you ever feel like you have had a dental issue fixed only to experience a similar issue months or years later without really knowing why or how to prevent it?
One simple example: If a patient continues to have cavities year over year and presents herself with very little plaque and calculus during her regular examinations, then one of the causes for her high caries risk is her diet.
Comprehensive dentistry is a win-win solution for you and the dental team. You end up having a higher quality of life while saving in the long run, and the dental team can have the incredible satisfaction of providing meaningful change.
What is Full Mouth Rehabilitation?
Full mouth rehabilitation (FMR) is a comprehensive dental treatment aimed at addressing various oral health issues throughout the entire mouth.
Signs you may need Full Mouth Rehabilitation are if you have one or more of the following:
You have teeth that are worn down excessively (more than is usual for your age).
You have chronic teeth or jaw pain (temporomandibular disorder or TMD).
You are missing teeth.
You have experienced dental trauma such as chipped or fractured teeth.
You have severe gum (periodontal) disease.
All FMR cases are planned uniquely to each patient's individual circumstances. Treatments may include some or all of the following:
Gum/periodontal treatment to prevent teeth from loosening further.
Replacing old and worn fillings
Zirconia/porcelain/composite crowns/veneers to build up teeth to correct the bite and create a more youthful appearance
Splint therapy to determine if the pain is a bite related issue
Implants or bridges to replace missing teeth.
Orthodontics if the bite cannot be fixed alone by point 3 above.
FMR cases can have numerous positive effects such as:
Correcting some or all of the 5 signs above
Aligning and whitening the teeth for an aesthetic improvement
By adjusting the bite we can lengthen the lower third of the face for an often younger appearance (the reduction of wrinkles in the corner of the lips).
FMR can also have negative effects:
In order to place crowns, teeth need to be worn down
Any dental work placed in the mouth needs to be maintained just like real teeth in order for it to last
There is a time and money cost
If you think you or a loved one may need FMR, please contact us and we will arrange a FMR consultative appointment with Dr Benson Chan.
Does Aspire Dental Care offer general dental services like fillings, root canals and cleanings?
Yes.
In fact a lot of ‘complicated’ dentistry is built on top of a strong dental health foundation. In order to build that foundation, we provide periodontal (gum and bone) treatment, fillings, root canals and other treatments that you would find in a typical dental clinic.

We truly believe that our environment and a soft touch can reverse years or decades of fear.

What is the drill-fill-extract cycle and why does Aspire focus on ending it?
The drill-fill-extract cycle describes the pattern many patients experience:
a cavity is filled, the filling fails or another cavity appears, a tooth eventually needs extraction — and the cycle continues without ever addressing the root cause.
At Aspire Dental Care, ending this cycle has been our focus since 2018. We do this by identifying the underlying pattern behind a patient's dental problems — whether that is diet, bite, gum health or other factors — and building a long-term plan that addresses the cause, not just the symptom.

Does Aspire Dental Care treat adults and older patients?

What causes gums to bleed and hurt after a dental scaling?
Normally, healthy gums will not bleed when scaling. They only bleed when calculus accumulates in the mouth.
The accumulation of dental calculus around the gums causes inflammation (that is not painful on a day-to-day basis) and swelling of the gums, which may bleed when exposed to external force such as a thorough teeth cleaning.
If your gums bleed slightly, you need to pay more attention to daily cleaning. If you bleed heavily, it means your gums have been severely inflamed, which may indicate periodontal disease.
So, if after a scaling there is...
Little blood = Little calculus
Lots of blood = Lots of calculus
How old should my child be to start orthodontic treatment?
We have had orthodontic patients from 7 to 70 years old. The best time to start treatment really depends, however, it is best to start the first orthodontic assessment around 7 to 8 years old when the front 6-8 adult incisors have erupted.
We have found that early childhood orthodontics (or “phased orthodontics”) are beneficial to early correction of some facial deformities and prevention of extraction orthodontics when the child later becomes a teenager.
Which is better: Invisible braces or traditional braces?
Both invisible braces (e.g. Invisalign, Angel Aligner, Zenyum) and traditional braces can be effective, depending on your specific needs.
Invisalign is just one brand of clear aligners that is available to patients. Traditional braces can be separated into traditional brackets, self ligating brackets, buccal braces or lingual braces.
Invislible braces works by using clear plastic to push teeth into place. Traditional braces work by pulling teeth towards the metal wire. Depending on your aesthetic, functional, and health needs, one can truly be better than the other. That is why we do not believe in a one size fits all approach.
Some seemingly impossible non-surgical treatments are achieved with invisible braces and the same can be said for traditional braces (if surgery is needed our dentists will inform our patients). The choice comes down to matching each technology with your dental and facial goals as well as lifestyle and logistical circumstances. Please send us a message by Whatsapp to see how we can help you with your unique treatment needs.
What are the pros and cons of dental implants versus dentures?
Implants are the closest replacement to replicating the feel, bite and appearance of natural teeth. So much so that our patients who have received dental implants generally tell us they are 80-100% like natural teeth. Most attribute the remaining 10-20% due to the fact that they psychologically know it is not real, but not in terms of chewing function or feel.
Dentures are usually indicated only for those who do not have the financial ability to afford a dental implant or a dental bridge. This is because typical dentures only replicate roughly 20-40% of chewing function and are inconvenient.
Firstly, if there are moderate to a lot of missing teeth, dentures sit on gum and not on the nearby teeth. So all the force of chewing is on the gums and therefore cannot chew harder or tougher foods (that may or may not contain more nutrients).
Secondly, dentures are bulkier and less convenient than implants because they have bars and plates to connect all the clasps and denture teeth, and they need to be taken off when sleeping.
Thirdly, dentures wear down quicker due to the teeth made out of plastic, so the bite changes over time. They also clasp on real teeth - gradually leading to cavities or loosening and thus leading to possible extraction. Most patients that wear dentures need to replace them roughly every 5-10 years due to these two reasons.
However, even with all these drawbacks, they are still a good choice for those who cannot opt for surgery, have too little teeth to support dental bridge(s) or do not have enough bone to support dental implants.
Does Aspire offer periodontal treatment?
At Aspire Dental Care, we offer comprehensive periodontal treatment — including non-surgical and surgical options — to help patients with gum disease stop the progression of bone loss and keep their natural teeth for longer.
Our team of dentists to dental hygienists to dental assistants are attuned to supporting patients with periodontal disease at the root level.
Gum health is a foundation of all other dental work, and we treat it as such.
Can gum disease be reversed? What can I expect from periodontal treatment?
Mild gum disease (gingivitis) can be fully reversed with professional cleaning and improved home care.
More advanced gum disease (periodontitis) cannot be fully reversed — but it can be successfully managed to stop further bone and tooth loss.
At Aspire Dental Care, we focus on identifying the cause of your gum disease first, then building a long-term maintenance plan to stabilise your gum health and protect your remaining teeth.
What is Invisalign and does Aspire Dental Care offer it?
Invisalign is a brand of clear aligner orthodontics that uses a series of transparent, removable plastic trays to gradually move teeth into position.
Aspire Dental Care offers Invisalign as well as other clear aligner systems.
We also offer Invisalign First for children, Invisalign Palatal Expander for skeletal expansion in young children, and Invisalign Mandibular Advancement for jaw correction in adolescents.
Our approach to orthodontics is face-driven — meaning we consider not just tooth alignment, but the overall facial profile and long-term jaw development.
We are NOT a "Clear-Aligner Specific Clinic". We offer comprehensive dentistry that not only straightens teeth; we look at teeth shape, face shape, implant planning, veneer planning, wisdom teeth management, periodontal management, gummy smile, upper lip to base of nose angle and more. All factors that affect a person's aesthetics from a fundamental level.
Why do my dental problems keep coming back?
If your dental problems keep coming back, it is usually a sign that the root cause has not yet been identified.
Most recurring dental problems — repeated cavities, ongoing gum bleeding, teeth that keep chipping — stem from unseen and unfelt habits or structural issues that a single treatment cannot fix.
At Aspire Dental Care, this is the first question we try to answer: not just what is wrong, but why it keeps happening. When the pattern is found and addressed, problems become less likely to return.
Is a consultation included when I book a dental scaling at Aspire Dental Care?
Yes. If you request a scaling, our dentist will perform a thorough oral examination and will discuss your oral needs.
Consultation fees are charged if a patient requests an 'unscheduled' appointment (i.e. there was no planned appointment or pre-booking made by Our Team).
Does Aspire Dental Care offer payment plans for orthodontics, implants or major treatment?
Orthodontics can last anywhere from a couple of months up to approximately 2-3 years:
- 50% deposit then the remaining is divided into ‘monthly’ payments until the treatment is finished.
Implant treatment can last approximately 2-6 months:
- Payments can be divided into 3 parts until the treatment is finished.
Full Mouth Rehabilitation or 3-day Full Mouth Implants approximately takes 6-8 weeks and 2-6 months to complete respectively:
- Payments can be divided into 3 parts until the treatment is finished.
Most other treatments can be completed on the same day or approximately in two appointments:
- These treatments require full payment upon completion of treatment.
What payment methods do you accept?
We accept Cash, Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Union Pay, WeChat Pay, Alipay, Payme and Health Care Voucher (Healthcare Voucher).
How do I book a dental appointment at Aspire Dental Care in Kwun Tong?
The easiest way is to Whatsapp us at +852 9723 8367.
How often should I get my teeth cleaned at the dentist?
Our usual recommendation is once every 6-18 months to prevent periodontal disease. The frequency of scaling is determined foremost by the health of the gums, also the amount of stain and calculus.
What happens at my first consultation at Aspire Dental Care?
At your first consultation, we begin by listening. We want to understand what has been happening — not just the immediate problem, but the full picture behind it.
From there, your dentist will take any necessary records (such as X-rays, photographs or 3D scans), identify the pattern behind your dental concerns, and explain what that means for your specific situation.
You will leave with a clear understanding of what is happening and what your options are — so you can make a decision that is right for you. There is no pressure to commit to treatment at the first visit.
Should I use mouthwash every day? And how do I use it correctly?
Mouthwash is only a supplement to good tooth brushing and interdental cleaning (i.e. flossing or interdental brush).
You can use a suitable mouthwash 'only' if necessary.
For example, use a mouthwash containing fluoride to prevent tooth decay; use a mouthwash containing antiseptic ingredients to treat inflammation.
How do I keep my teeth white?
Keeping teeth white has many factors. The most important factor is to prevent teeth from staining or yellowing. The best way to do that is to prevent teeth from drying after eating or drinking highly staining foods/drinks (i.e. curry, coffee, tea). Drink plenty of water or at the minimum, rinse (subtly or vigorously) after intake of those types of foods.
Another way is to remove micro-stains before they become obvious to the naked eye. We recommend brushing with a slightly abrasive* substance like activated charcoal powder (applied with or without toothpaste).
*Because these substances are abrasive, they should be used infrequently. The frequency can be determined with your dentist depending on the health of your current teeth.
Why do I always feel like I'm losing ground with my teeth, even though I brush every day?
Brushing is essential — but it addresses only one part of oral health.
Most of the factors that cause teeth to deteriorate over time are silent and unfelt: the bite forces that crack teeth, the gum inflammation that erodes bone, the dietary habits that increase cavity risk. These often do not hurt until they are advanced.
If you feel like you are always fixing the same problems, it is likely that one of these deeper causes has not yet been identified. At Aspire Dental Care, finding that pattern is the first thing we do.
